2008 Numbers
Some highlights from 2008:
2440 cyclists registered for the event
64% more cyclists were travelling to work on Bike to Work Day (Bicycle traffic counts done on the day of the event in 12 locations throughout the city showed an average 64% bicycle traffic increase of over previous 2008 counts (increases ranged from 13% to 145% depending on the location))
20% of registered participants said that were first time bicycle commuters (432 cyclists total)
11,241 cyclists cycled on Bike to Work Day (estimate based on 2006 Census of cyclist commuters (5.760) x the increase in 2008 over 2007 (1.19) x the increased traffic on Bike to Work Day Winnipeg (1.64))
400 participant and 70 volunteer Bike to Work Day t-shirts were given away
280 cyclists received a free pancake breakfast at the Forks
100% of the waste from the pancake breakfast was composted
52 companies, groups, and organizations supported the event with financial or in-kind contributions
70 volunteers helped at The Forks and at Energy Stations all over the city
Cyclists who registered for Bike to Work Day Winnipeg 2008 were asked to complete a habits/needs survey. Approximately 2/3 of registered participants completed this optional survey. On a scale of 1 to 5, they were asked to rate what might influence them to cycle more:**
92% said more bicycle infrastructure
82% said increased driver awareness
55% said more secure/convenient parking
50% said showers at work
33% said more cycling events
30% said bike racks on buses
29% said living closer to work
26% said information on environmental benefits
16% said information on health benefits
14% said more cycling experience
14% said riding skills training
13% said hearing about local heroes/celebrities cycling to work
**percentages of people who answered 4 or 5 out of 5, with 5 being the most influence**
Also
79% said they owned a motor vehicle
53% said they had bicycle parking available
52% said they already cycle as much as possible
38% said they had a quiet, pleasant route to work
